The Raiders’ defense leads a surprising upset over Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs

When the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders play, it’s always exciting. However, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were unable to produce any offensive pyrotechnics in their 20-14 loss on Christmas Day due to frustrations and the intense division rivalry.

A pair of field goals from Daniel Carlson were the only points scored by Las Vegas during a lacklustre offensive performance. It made little difference, though, as the Raiders’ defence was on fire and won the unexpected game by scoring two touchdowns on mistakes committed by the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are now 9-6 and out of the running for the AFC’s top spot following their Christmas defeat. With a win, they can still take first place in the AFC West. On New Year’s Eve at home, they take on the Cincinnati Bengals in a replay of the previous two AFC championship games. Next up for Kansas City is the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With a record of 7-8, the Raiders will likely face intriguing playoff odds in the future. They were the AFC’s No. 12 seed heading into Monday’s match. To win the division, they would have to prevail when the Chiefs were losing. Vegas will play the Indianapolis Colts on the road before hosting the Denver Broncos in their final games.

Regarding the game on Monday, the Chiefs’ opening possessions of the holiday matchup were a sign of things to come. They started the game with back-to-back three-and-outs, a first for the Mahomes era. The offence managed minus 18 yards by the end of the first quarter. Since the St. Louis Rams of December 19, 2004, who had minus-20 yards in the first quarter of their 31-7 defeat against the Arizona Cardinals, no team has recorded fewer yards in a first quarter.

CBS released a video early in the second quarter showing Mahomes giving an impassioned, and maybe irritated, speech to his offensive line. After using running back Isiah Pacheco, the Chiefs appeared to be finally finding their form a few minutes later at the quarterback to score.

However, the Chiefs wasted two pricey opportunities after the trick play, which gave the Raiders’ defence some expensive presents. Late in the second quarter, Las Vegas took advantage of a series of errors and scored two touchdowns in just five seconds.

Defence tackle Bilal Nichols recovered an 8-yard fumble to score the opening touchdown. It was the outcome of yet another ill-fated effort at a trick play by Pacheco.

The following offensive play for the Chiefs saw cornerback Jack Jones breakthrough for a 33-yard score with a pick-six.

At home, the Chiefs were jeered off the field as the Raiders led 17–7 at halftime.

Mahomes tried to play hero ball in the third quarter, scurrying on what seemed like every play, but the Raiders defence stood firm. Carlson added another field goal to Las Vegas’ advantage as the Chiefs were unable to score in the quarter.

In the second half, Pacheco was hit in the head by a knee after his helmet fell off. In the fourth quarter, he was declared out due to a concussion. Pacheco tried to lay on the medical table, but it gave way under him in a Kansas City game that seemed to be going badly for them in every way.

In the fourth, the Chiefs’ attack appeared to be gathering steam. Before finding wide receiver Justin Watson on a touchdown throw, Mahomes managed to sidestep two defenders and maintain the play.

On the next drive, though, the Raiders managed to run the ball on the Chiefs’ defence and managed to hold on for the upset.

When time ran out, Mahomes and interim head coach of the Raiders, Antonio Pierce, both fought back tears. In a post-game interview, Pierce lauded the Raiders’ ability to persevere despite a challenging season. Following the midseason firing of former head coach Josh McDaniels, the team is presently 4-3 under his direction.

Mahomes was passionate off the field as well. He was undefeated going into the game in AFC West meetings after November 1st since 2019. Although that is a rather
