Apple is preparing to unveil the second generation of AirPods Pro at its “Far Out” event on Wednesday, according to a report from Apple tracker Mark Gurman. While we’ve been expecting the AirPods Pro 2 sometime this year, these are the first serious rumors that they could be out this week.
“The new AirPods Pro will update the model that first went on sale in October 2019,” says Gurman’s Power On newsletter. “Last year I reported that the new AirPods Pro would appear in 2022, and now I have been told that their big presentation will take place on Wednesday.”
The AirPods Pro 2 are rumored to have a number of upgrades, including Apple’s next-generation H1 processor. There’s also the option of getting better sound with Apple’s Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), which removes Bluetooth entirely, or by adding support for Bluetooth 5.2, which uses the LC3 codec for more efficient audio streaming. The AirPods Pro 2 may also use the same in-ear design as the Beats Fit Pro, and may come with a charging case that makes a sound when you search for it using Apple’s Find My app.
In addition to the new AirPods Pro, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 14 and a trio of new watches at its event, including an expensive and “rugged” model for extreme sports athletes.
